Top 7 Strategies On How To Write A Winning Resumé

  1. Customize the resume for EACH job you want. The more specific your resume addresses the individual needs of the business you are applying for, the more successful you will be.

  2. Identify and find out as much as you can about the position, the values, the skills that your ideal company is seeking, so that you can be assured to highlight your relevant skills.

  3. Keep your copy clean. Hit enter more often or use white space. Your ad, I mean resume, must not look like engineer dribble, unless the person who is hiring you is an engineer and they like dense information with little eye appeal. When in doubt, make your resume easy to read, and don't make it fancy unless you're applying for a art related position.

  4. Pick up at least 2 books at your local book store on how to write winning resumes. Also know that books on COPYRIGHTING are also very helpful.

  5. BEFORE you send your resume out, find out by asking the decision maker at the company you wish to work, what the best way is to get a job at their company. You may find this information on their website also. 90% of job hunters fail to do this critical step, and many succeed despite themselves. :) Make it easy on yourself, and find out the protocol to get hired.

  6. The usual stuff: Spell check, grammar check, make sure your language makes sense, and avoid run-on sentences. If you use buzz words in your resume, make sure they are relevant to the culture or industry that can appreciate them....but when in doubt, drop them out.

  7. WHAT MEDIUM? Resumes are no longer two pages double typed. Today, many companies EXPECT you to visit their website, learn about the job, and submit the resume to them electronically, and most importantly, in the FORMAT that they want it in. Tip: Never send in your resume electronically in a non standard format. Seems like MS Word is the Word Processing standard, but when in doubt, SEND ASCII PLAIN TEXT. Do not put the responsibility on the person doing the hiring to figure out which word processor you sent it with, as that is a sure formula for their trash bin.
