7 Tips to Ease Your Neck Pain

Conventional treatments such as medications and chiropractic care, don’t always provide relief to people who suffer from chronic neck pain. We are going to examine some alternative methods that work for many people suffering from chronic neck pain. If you’re one of those people, try the following seven tips to ease your neck pain.
- Stay Hydrated
Did you know that the discs between the vertebrae in your spine require water to maintain disc height and spinal alignment? At birth, each one of our spinal discs is made up of roughly 80 percent water. As we age, this ratio decreases with time and the disc degenerates as a consequence. That’s why staying hydrated may prevent further degeneration of cervical discs and reduce neck pain.
- Consider Acupuncture
Many people have reported that acupuncture provides varying degree of neck pain relief. Although it doesn’t help everyone, one thing to note is the skill of the practitioner. Make sure that if you choose to try out this method, you do so with someone who’s qualified.
- Choose a Neck-Supporting Chair
Good posture is an essential part of keeping your neck pain under control. A chair with a headrest will help keeping your cervical spine in a neutral position. Try to also make sure you use the headrest in your car while driving.
- Increase Magnesium Intake
Not many people know that magnesium is a mineral that helps with contraction and relaxation of your muscles. So increasing your magnesium intake may help to lessen your neck pain. You can either eat foods that contain magnesium or try to apply magnesium oil directly to your skin after a warm bath or shower.
- Use a Water Pillow
A lot of people report rejuvenating effects of water pillows that allow patients to dictate the firmness of their pillow. The more water you add, the firmer a pillow will get, less water will provide a softer pillow.
- Get in the Pool
Swimming in a pool has been reported to bring therapeutic effects to people suffering from neck pain. It helps to reduce inflammation, eases neck stiffness and provides quick pain relief for many. Just simply getting the water level up to your neck and moving around can do wonders.
- See a Physical Therapist
If nothing seems to help ease your neck pain, then you should really consider visiting a physical therapist. Besides easing your pain, your therapist may be able to identify secondary causes of pain and strengthen the weak areas of your neck through targeted exercises.
