7 Tips To Aid Recovery Following Dental Implants

The decision to get dental implants is not an easy one. After all, it is a surgical procedure and an expensive one when compared to other methods of tooth replacement. Even though dental implant success rate is around 95%, implant failure can occur, especially in the first few days and weeks after the surgery. Here are seven tips to help you in recovery and avoid implant failure:

  1. Be Patient

    Dental implants are not a quick solution to missing teeth, be prepared for up to nine month of healing. The reason for such long healing times is the need for osseointegration to take place. That is when the bone and soft tissues surrounding the implant post will fuse together.

  2. Take your medicine

    It is absolutely crucial to take the prescribed medication for the first few days after the implant surgery. This will aid in alleviating any discomfort and pain once the anaesthetics have worn off. If any antibiotics were prescribed, make sure to finish the whole course.

  3. Adjust your diet

    After your surgery, youíre going to want to stick to soft foods which wonít get lodged in any gaps and will slide down easily. Foods that require little chewing, such as soups, eggs, yogurt and mashed potatoes are ideal. As your body starts to heal, you can gradually introduce harder foods back to your diet.

  4. Cold compresses

    Although this varies from person to person, swelling and bruising is common following implant surgery. To help reduce pain and discomfort, apply cold compresses.

  5. Take things easy

    Following your oral surgery, take things easy, donít try to do too much too soon. Avoid vigorous exercise until your closer to being healed.

  6. No smoking

    The use of tobacco products greatly affects your bodyís ability to heal and will increase your healing time. Smoking also increases your risk of implant failure. Itís highly recommended to give up smoking before the procedure and until your fully healed, to avoid complications. Of course the best thing is to quit smoke for good.

  7. Stay in touch

    Itís important to visit your dentist for regular check-ups during the healing process. If between your scheduled appointments you have any problems, donít wait till your visit, call them right away. Doing so can help avoid complications and ensure a successful outcome of your treatment.
