The reasons for digestion problems are numerous. Constant pain in your stomach is a warning sign that something is wrong. Other signs could be gas and diarrhea. These are just some of the reasons to see a gastroenterologist. These specialists treat conditions that affect the organs of the digestive tract, including esophagus, colon, stomach, liver and pancreas. There are many reasons that you may need the assistance of a gastroenterologist, but these are some of the main reasons people would see one:

  1. Heartburn (GERD)

Heartburn is a burning sensation or pain that you feel in your chest or throat. It happens when the stomach acid goes up into the esophagus, which is a tube that connects your mouth to the stomach. Lots of people experience occasional heartburn, which go away on their own. But for those that suffer from heartburn on a regular basis, a visit to a gastroenterologist is highly recommended.

  2. Gallstones

Gallstones are tiny, hard stones that can form in the gallbladder. They can be as small as a grain of sand or as big as a golf ball. If you ever experience sudden pain on the right side of your abdomen, it could be due to a gallstone. They develop due to imbalances in your digestive liquid.

  3. Lactose Intolerance

If you experience uncomfortable symptoms after consuming dairy products or drinking milk, you may be lactose intolerant. Lactose is a sugar found in milk, for which our body produces lactase to help break down dairy products. People who are lactose intolerant, donít make enough lactase to completely digest these foods.

  4. Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is a condition associated with the immune system. Anyone who suffers from this disorder needs to avoid eating gluten. The introduction of gluten into the body causes the immune system to respond by damaging their small intestine. Which will lead to pain and diarrhea.

  5. Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease is when your immune systems mistakes food for dangerous germs and attacks them. People with IBD suffer from chronic inflammation in the digestive tract. Which causes severe belly pain, rectal bleedings and diarrhea.

  6. Colon Cancer Screening

The key to beating colon cancer is to detect it in its early stages. It develops from abnormal growths on the colon or rectum. A gastroenterologist can detect these growths and remove them before they become cancerous. People who are 50 or older, should go in for regular screenings for colon cancer.

  7. Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids is when the veins in the rectum become swollen. Itís a very common thing among people, but itís also pretty easy to treat. Constipation or hard stools are usually the cause for this problem. Changing to a high-fiber diet along with over-the-counter medications sometimes can be enough to get rid of them.

But if they just won’t go away, go see a gastroenterologist. -- http://www.manhattangastroenterology.com/
