A great smile is something everyone wants to have! Thus, it is important to have good oral hygiene, since poor hygiene can lead to a variety of dental problems such as gum disease. Regular visits to your dentist and cleanings can help to avoid many problems and help you maintain a healthy and beautiful smile. Here is a list of 7 dental hygiene tips that will ensure you have a better smile.

  1. Proper Brushing:

Proper brushing technique is essential to good oral hygiene! To brush your teeth properly, position your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle near the gum line. When brushing, use a gentle back-and-forth, up-and-down motion in order to avoid bleeding. Don’t forget to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth to remove bacteria and avoid having bad breath.

  2. Flossing:

We all know flossing can be a tedious chore and often forgotten about when in a rush. But flossing is very important as it can help to remove food particles and other substances that brushing cannot. Dentist recommend flossing at least once a day.

  3. Use Mouthwash:

Mouthwash isn’t exactly an essential part of your dental hygiene, but it’s still a good addition to the previous tips. Mouthwash helps to kill and maintain the bacteria in our mouths, resulting in good breath and stronger teeth. You also shouldn’t rely on mouthwash to do all the work, rather use it as a supplement to brushing and flossing.

  4. Avoid Tobacco:

Tobacco is not only detrimental to our overall health, it is also extremely bad for our oral hygiene. Avoiding tobacco will save us from oral cancer and periodontal complications.

  5. Limit Sodas, Coffee and Alcohol:

A lot of these beverages contain high levels of phosphorous, which is actually needed for a healthy mouth, but too much phosphorous can reduce the body’s level of calcium. This can lead to dental problems such as gum disease and tooth decay. Many beverages contain additives such as food dye and corn syrup, which can make our white teeth appear dull and without color.

  6. Consume Calcium and Other Vitamins:

Calcium is an essential for the health of our teeth and bones. It is recommended to consume dairy products to receive our required dose of calcium. For those that cannot consume dairy products, calcium supplements are recommended. Besides calcium, other vitamins which are needed for a healthy dental hygiene are vitamin D, vitamin B, copper, zinc, iodine, iron and potassium.

  7. Visit Your Dentist:

It’s recommended to visit your dentist at least twice a year to observe good hygiene treatment.

A good place to visit if your in the Brooklyn area, is Broadway Family Dental.
